The Silent Witness — felt presence without form

Also called: The Observer, The Presence, The Watcher, Felt presence

otherPhase 4
How often is this reported?
Among the better-attested phenomena: presences without imagery 17% and omnipresence 14% in Michael et al. (2021); felt-presence is a standing category in psychedelic and anomalous-experience research (Luke), and Strassman's volunteers reported a powerful sense of an aware presence even without form. Well-documented across sources.

Appearance

No appearance at all: an unmistakable someone-is-here without image — location-specific (behind, beside, above) or pervading the whole space. Michael et al. (2021) coded 'presences with no imagery' in 17% of encounters and 'omnipresence' in 14%; Effect Index's Level 1 entities are 'vaguely defined presences' below the threshold of visible form. Distinct from every other entry in this taxonomy by being defined negatively — pure detected other.

Behavior

Attention: the Witness watches. It does not act, guide, or interfere; its entire behavior is sustained, evident awareness of the experiencer. Sometimes it accompanies (a felt escort through the experience); sometimes it simply is, before, during, and after the visual content. The Nexus lexicon separately records travelers being placed into 'witness consciousness' — 'a camera mode' of pure perception — by entities, the mirror-image phenomenon.

Communication

None, and yet total: experiencers report being completely known — read to the bottom — without a single message. The absence of communication from so evident an intelligence is itself the experience's signature.

Emotional tone

Ranges with set: profound companionship and safety (being accompanied), neutral observation (being studied), or dread (being watched by something unaccountable). Frequently described as more real than any visual entity.

Message or purpose

None stated — presence as such. Interpretations span guardian, researcher, God, the experiencer's own awareness externalized, and the space itself noticing its visitor. The atlas records all as interpretations.

What the sources say

'Presences with no imagery' coded in 17% of encounters and 'omnipresence' in 14% — non-visual entity contact as a substantial minority of all encounters.
Level 1 of Effect Index's entity-visibility scale is the 'vaguely defined presence' — entity contact below the threshold of resolved form.
UNM volunteers reported the immediate, pre-visual conviction of an intelligent presence aware of them — often the first and most certain element of the encounter.
Luke situates DMT felt-presence within the wider anomalous-experience literature (sensed-presence phenomena across states), supporting it as a robust cross-state category.
